Why WLHC is an Award-winning Project

WLHC won the international Bentley Be Inspired Innovation in Generative Design in October last year, and was shortlisted for Best Designed Project and for Best Local Government Project Team in the Public-Private Finance awards in April.

The Bentley Be Inspired Innovation in Generative Design award was given to Bath-based architects Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios for the WLHC project, in recognition of the firm’s ground-breaking work in developing and using state-of-the-art software to test out adaptation of the cones at the top of the building to ensure they were the most energy-efficient. This resulted in a change in design, from six to seven cones.

The project was then shortlisted for Best Designed Project and Best Local Government Project Team at the national Public-Private Finance (PPF) Awards in April.

These awards give the highest level of recognition in the industry, indicating that WLHC has firmly established its national worth and relevance as a high-profile partnership project.

The design recognises the importance of space, with a variety of large areas in the building, from the spacious children's library, which will be the size of a small primary school, to the meeting rooms which can be used for multiple purposes, and the quiet study zones located on the top floor to enable learning.

All of the areas combine to create an overall space to fit the needs of everybody, whether they are a family or an individual; someone coming in to find a place to study or to pick out their favourite book; to enquire about their council services or research into their family history.

Iain Paul, Design Manager for the project, said: "I'm extremely proud that we're being nominated for awards at such an early stage in the project. Special thanks must go to Galliford Try and their fantastic design team.

"A lot of work was put into creating a sustainable building that will act as a landmark for Worcestershire and the wider region, and it's great that our commitment to quality for the building design has been recognised."
